Dear Latha and ALL ~ I agree with you that pain serves a purpose, and often that purpose is to turn us God(dess)ward. In my case, the pain is not thoughts (although I do get that), but it is severe physical pain. I am not making excuses, just a distinction. Intense physical pain is very hard to ignore, and it is with me, even when I am doing my sadhana. Sometimes the focus on the sadhana helps mitigate the pain, sometimes not. It is very difficult for me to sit when I am doing chanting or meditation, even only with my legs crossed, never mind the positions that Steve and Swami were chatting about earlier. I do believe that focus is important, and while it dosn't take my physical pain away, it does mitigate it, as I said before, such as when I am reading this digest. On the other hand, typing to respond to posts exacerbates the pain because of the typing. It is a kind of conundrum. So I have no answer, but I do believe that when one is talking about physical pain that a person has because of an illness, it is important to be careful not to make the person feel worse because, regardless of what they do or what their focus is, the pain is always present.
