Last week my hatha yoga teacher talked about pain. He started his yoga practice as a burn patient; someone recommended he try yoga to restore some of his movement and flexibility. He says he knows about pain; that there were times the movements tore his wounds open and he bled on his mat. He says that because of his background, over the years he has worked with people to use yogic techniques for pain management. He said one of his biggest successes was working with his mother to help her with unmanageable pain from shingles. (He says it's the only time he ever got to tell his mother what to do :-) I don't know how many hatha yoga teachers work with pain patients, but maybe this isn't all that uncommon. I remember talking to a yoga teacher a few years ago who was working in with AIDS patients. I also did a little poking around on the 'net and found a paper for you; it's a list or compilation of articles (some with abstracts or summaries) on the use of (hatha) yoga, meditation, and other related techniques for pain management. I've only read about half of the list so far. Some of the articles are available online; most aren't. If you need to track down a particular article, ask your local reference librarian for help. Librarians are good problem solvers and he or she may be able to help you acquire a copy of the article. (you will need Adobe acrobat reader to read this paper; it's 21 pages.) http://iayt.org/painmanagement.pdf
Guest guest
Dear one, Thank you so much for sharing all this information. I have family members and friends suffering from chronic pain. Perhaps this extensive bibliography will point them in a new direction.
