Guest guest
Dear All, Maa sang some of her old songs today at the evening satsang. Prabhater Alo - was one of them ... As she sang, the assembled crowd went still. Just the sound of her voice and her tanpura ... When she finished , Swamiji gently whispered "Jai Maa" The rest of us couldnt rouse ourselves to say anything. Atleast , speaking for myself, the song and Maa singing never fail to move me and I love the silence that comes from just listening to her. Almost on cue Maa said this to the satsang and I paraphrase "Singing is the highest sadhana. When your mind starts wandering ... start singing ...anything..and a few minutes later you will have forgotten the trouble. Dont worry whether you have a good or bad voice ... just sing...anything that comes to you. Singing is the highest sadhana. You can go in quickly" and She asked us to try it out as a sadhana. I will Maa. Love Latha

I am going to try this today and check it out for myself. Jai Ma! P.S.: I too love the profound silence that ensues after a fantastic performance of a rousing bhajan.... it usually goes away after 10-15 seconds... I wish there was a technique for prolonging the ecstatic state.... if anyone has any advice, I am all ears!

Guest guest
Oh what a grace to hear this. You know, I went to offer the kirtan on Thursday as I mentioned. I had just agreed to offer it and surrender the results for recording. When I arrived, many beautiful souls arrived to help chant. But the sound person was very very late (got lost) and there technical problems so we didn't have sound until almost the end of the night. For me, however, it reminded me of the churning of the ocean that Lakshmi came out of...so many seeming obstacles. And there was this grace that arose. So many times I have tried to surrender results, or thought I had. Somehow, Lakshmi's grace was present. All was perfect. We didn't get the recording, but I learned a lot and feel that "I" came through a fog to a place where grace and ease and wellness and prosperity abide. I am ready to really abide with Lakshmi. Jai Jai Ma and thanks and praise. Regarding Maa's words. Yes..I am so glad to read this. I can meditate for a while and it is an effect, but when I sing to my Love, my God, my Lord Ma...the grace pours in and seems to open me faster, easier than I could imagine. It is easier to ask then "Who is singing"? Thank you all for your great wishes. Regarding the silence - the 10-15 second silence at the end...for me it is like echoes that remain after a bell is rung.... Something palpable and yes, it may fade. My practice lately, which I think I heard from Gangaji (from lineage of Ramana Maharshi, then Poonjaji in lucknow (who was my teacher) to Gangaji) is to ask, when things seem chaotic or in turmoil, "is stillness present even now"? The very question is like a weight that takes me deep to it. Anyway, thank you. Thank you source of sound. Thank you Maaa for sharing your beautiful voice and sounds. Jai Maa Lakshmi. Jai Maa Saraswaati. Jai Shreee Ma, Jai Swamiji. Thanks and Praise to the One who sings through each of us. That profound silence you hear is actually an inner silence, bhajan/kirtan is a practice where you quiet your thoughts and strengthen your one pointedness, after singing Gods name for 20 minutes, your concentration is so intense that you can hear the silence between your thoughts. That's my thoughts on it anyway, love shubal PS: Bhajan is not a performance

That's my thoughts on it > anyway, love shubal PS: Bhajan is not a performance Hi Shubal, I found your note really amusing because of the striking usage of words and how putting the opposite words could also be equally truly descriptive, so let me share it here and hope you will see it too. > That profound silence you hear (what a wonderful oxymoron!) >is actually an inner silence (or "is actually an inner sound". words and their meaning seem to merge here!) Your thoughts are perfectly well-taken, and they are my thoughts too. Bhajan is like an active meditation which is loaded with 'rasa' to please all your senses - taming the external-going senses masterfully and helping release energies to the mind to be internal- going. The word "performance" seems to remind you of "natya" or a sangeet concert, I guess. That was not the intention. As I post, I tend to experiment with words to describe an idea (burning off my verbose karma, if you wish), and in this occasion, the word "performance" was entirely appropriately intended and used - the intention being "the action taken to sing".
