Guest guest
Question from Latha: Verse 14 says "Whoever drinks the water from the Guru's feet removes the root of ignorance and purifies the karma(activities) from birth, obtains perfection, wisdom, and renunciation" The word "purifies the karma" brought this question to my mind. I have read elsewhere that the Guru actually takes on the karma of a disciple. Is this true ? Can you please shed some light on this subject. Thank you for your time Swamiji's response : Does a wife share the karma of her husband? And vice versa? When we are in a relationship, we cannot help but sharing our karmas together. In the same way, in relationship with a guru, we give our karma to the guru. Often this karma has effect upon the guru instead of upon us. Guest guest
Latha, This taking on of karma is such a beautiful thing. When my gurudeva was preparing to drop his body, he spent months in the hospital, weak, sick, and in pain. Did he seek to heal himself? No, he did not. He bore his pain, according to written accounts, with equanimity. It is my belief that he did this on behalf of his students, out of his selfless love for them. Some time after he left this world, I was doing a devotional contemplation while listening to spiritual music. I was considering this gift he gave, and my heart overflowed with love for him. Then, on a very subtle level, I felt a presence and "voice" simultaneously enter the edge of my mind, and it said, "It was for you, as well." I was both humbled and filled with gratitude beyond my ability to express. I cherish this memory of what for me was assurance of the truth of what I supposed, of an ultimate demonstration of selfless love. Though I did not meet my gurudeva while he was here, his gifts of love were beyond all dispute or doubt. He was always with me, always guiding my steps, even when I was not aware of him. The guru is indeed the fount of all compassion and help for the lost in this world. There is nothing to compare to the guru. Jai Guru!
