Each joint family is part of a greater body called theextended family...A joint family lives under one roof... The joint family is founded on selfless sharing, community ownership and the fact that each member's voice and opinion is important... Dear Steve, Wow! I love Subramuniyaswami. I have Dancing with Ganesha, but it is in storage in Oregon (I am beginning to feel like this is a mantra of sorts...). You are really going at it ~ doing all the sadhana with the Devi Mandir Group and also the Master Class from the Himalayan Academy. I love the books that Subramuniyaswami wrote, and there is still one I want to get that is about how life started on earth (I can't remember the name right now). For a long while I got "Hinduism Today," the Himalayan Academy magazine. Sometime I will again, as I loved it very much. We used to have extended families in Western culture, in the "olden" days, even in the early days of America. Where did it go ~ this idea of families sharing space, spirituality, the ups and downs of ife? I think industrialization had something to do with it, and the fact that this extended family idea is not one that is so highly and formally embraced by all the differing Western spirituality belief systems. But I think the 1950's really did us in. This supposed ideal time in our nation's history was when the focus on the "nuclearn family" became so highly regarded, with everyone separated behind their own little white picket fences. Would that we did have the type of family described in the quote above. Jai Maa ~ Linda
