Guest guest
Dear Steve, Here is my tale for you and a little extra... I asked my Guru to give me a spiritual name - something I knew he did when asked. My understanding was that it was to assist me in my spiritual growth, so I looked to my Teacher for that boon. He took about a week or so to "find" the right name for me [he sometimes did it instantly]. I believe the name has been very helpful for me, and perhaps for others as well. Sometimes, folks ask for a spiritual name and then don't use it. i always wonder about that. Why did they ask for the name? Was it just to try out something "cool"? Was it to get a name they "liked"? Was it because others were doing it? If for any of these reasons then it is fine to not use the name, yet if they were asking for an aid in their spiritual development, it won't be much use unless they use it. All names are mantras, sound formulas, that influence the one using the name. We "identify" with that name and respond to it. That vibration becomes "our" own vibration, and helps to shape us in various ways - physical, mental, emotional, etc. When taking a name for your spiritual development, certainly the meaning is useful in bringing to mind beneficial qualities, but it is the sound vibration itself that is most helpful in bringing those qualities to fullness in the lives of the ones so named. together on the path, jayadeva , "Steve Connor" <sconnor@a...> wrote: > > > can people share how they received their hindu names (sorry if that is > or is not the proper term.) > > from your parents, an initiation, the guru, or did you name yourself > under your own inspiration? > > pranams, > > steve c, a monkey that flew to the west. Guest guest
Jai Maa! We were travelling with Maa and Swami and the family. We split off from the group for a couple of days to visit family in Rochester. While there, an aquantence gifted me with a very beautiful Shiva Lingam. When arriving back to Maa and Swami in Chicago, I saw Mother and said, "look at this Lingam that was given to me, could you please bless it"? Mother did even better, she performed pran pratishta, awakening of the deity, in this case Lord Shiva, into the Lingam. This was all taking place in the living room at the house where we were staying. After performing this initial puja, Mother turned to me and said that She had gotten it during the puja that my name was Nirmal. Swami Ji was there also and told the meaning of the name. He said, " Nimalananda, your karma now is to create purity wherever you go". It was a cherished moment. I've been trying to live up to it ever since! Guest guest
Dear Steve, Actually the name I was given is "Jayadeva.Omjayadeva" came about as I tried to find an available web-address. But, I admit that I am totally in love with OM. So, just like you begin mantras with OM [the 5-syllabled mantra, om namah sivaya, has six syllables because the OM is added at the beginning but not counted as one of the syllables of the mantra], my name certainly welcomes a beginning OM. blessings, jayadeva , "Steve Connor" <sconnor@a...> wrote: > > > very nice story! that makes it so personal. he did a great job with > yours, OMJAYADEVA has such a flow to it, OM with joy thrown in. > OMJAYADEVA! pranams! > > , "Jayadeva" <omjayadeva> > wrote: > > > > > > Dear Steve, > > > > Here is my tale for you and a little extra... > > > > I asked my Guru to give me a spiritual name - something I knew he > > did when asked. Guest guest
My guru gave me my name when I went with him to India in 1987. I have used it privately since then and have been using it more publicly for the past several years. I have considered legally changing my first name and wondered then if I would change my last name as well. Arjuna is a character with whom I always related. Recently, I began a devotion to Hanuman an learned that he always sits on Arjuna's chariot and is on his banner! Things continue to unfold most wonderfully.
