All names are mantras, sound formulas, that influence the one using

the name. We "identify" with that name and respond to it. That

vibration becomes "our" own vibration, and helps to shape us in

various ways - physical, mental, emotional, etc. When taking a name

for your spiritual development, certainly the meaning is useful in

bringing to mind beneficial qualities, but it is the sound vibration

itself that is most helpful in bringing those qualities to fullness

in the lives of the ones so named.

Dear jayadeva ~ what you wrote here is wonderful and true, and I had

not thought about it in this way before. I believed, based on my

experience of seeing others, especially my sister, as for a spiritual

name, that it was a marker of some kind of progress. But what you say

here makes so much more sense ... it is to help us progress. I will

remember this when I ask for a name. Jai Maa ~ Linda P.S. By the

way, since Shree Maa and Swamiji are no longer traveling how does one

ask for a name? Do they have a process for this, during their stay at

the Mandir?
