Guest guest
This was adapted from Swamiji's rendering in the Swami Purana book. This book also contains other entertaining tales blended with ageless wisdom - for both children and adults alike. The book is available at http://www.shreemaa.org/bookstore.htm =================== The story goes that Varuna had once cursed Raja Harischandra with a dreadful disease and the only way out was for him to sacrifice his son. Now the King - Raja Harischandra was in deep quandary. He loved his only son Rohitasva very much and would not be parted with him , so he sought out his spiritual advisor - the great sage Vasishta and presented the problem to him. Vasishta said "Oh King, there are many different types of sons. There is a son that is born from the union between husband and wife; there is a son that is born from knowledge, by means of initiation; there is a son that is won from the spoils of war, who has been stolen by force of arms; there is a son who has been given shelter as an orphan, who seeks refuge with a father; and there is a son who has been purchased by paying a fitting prie. Therefore, oh King, find another son !" The King, having found the way out , asked for his men to go out into the kingdom to see if anyone would sell their son. One poor Brahmin named Ajigartha , out of sheer necessity and inability to provide for his 3 children agreed to sell his middle son - a young boy named Shunahshepa. So the little boy was bound to the sacrificial post and was crying pitifully when the executioned raised his sword. At that moment, the great sage Vishwamitra asked for the execution to stop - he went upto the boy and whispered Varuna's bija mantra into his ear. The boy chanted Varuna's mantra and Varuna could no longer contain himself - he ordered the child to be released and freed Harishchandra from his pain. Everybody in the assembly heaved a sigh of relief. The young boy Shunahshepa now asked the crowd "Oh learned brahmins, now that I am free, please tell me to whose house shall I go ? Who is my father now ?" Some said "Ajigartha is your father" Others said "Harishchandra , the king, paid a price for you. Go to his house" But vasishta stood up and said " No , Viswamitra gave you initiation in the mantra which saved your life. Now he is your true Spiritual Father. You go home with him" Then Viswamitra embraced Shunahshepa with fatherly love and together they returned to his house. Jai Maa Latha
Guest guest
I love that story... and particularly the way you have told it. It is wonderful for us to be aware of our spiritual parents and all that they do for us.
