I remember from the retreat I went to that Swamiji, in talking about gurus, mentioned several kinds: the upa guru, who gets you to your first guru; then you may go to another and another and another, until finally you reach the Supreme Guru, whom Swamiji named as Shiva. It seems to me there must be some kind of attachment to the guru(s) along the way, else you would cease the journey. I also believe that the attachment to the guru is a way of finding non-attachment to other things, and I very much have some things I would love to be non-attached to at the moment. But I agree with the statement you quoted ~ the ultimate is to realize the Guru and God/dess in one's Self.
