Guest guest
OM Dear family, Swami Vivekananda was born on Paush Krishna Paksha Saptami (January 12, 1863). This year-2005- it falls on February 01. Janma Tithi puja will be conducted in all Ramakrishna centers on February 01, 2005. On this occasion, here are a few quotes of Swamiji as food for thought. (These are taken from http://www.vivekananda.org/quotes.aspx) QUOTES: “Face the brutes.” That is a lesson for all life—face the terrible, face it boldly. Like the monkeys, the hardships of life fall back when we cease to flee before them. (Background story: Once Swami Vivekananda during his travels in Bharat before going to West was walking on the streets of Varanasi (Benaras). Suddenly he noticed that monkeys were following him. He started walking fast to escape them and found that they were still following him keeping pace with him. At that time a sadhu, seeing this shouted: “Face the brute”. Swamiji stopped and turned back to face the monkeys. Seeing this all monkeys ran away.) Anything that brings spiritual, mental, or physical weakness, touch it not with the toes of your feet. Anything that is secret and mysterious in these systems of yoga should be at once rejected. The best guide in life is strength. In religion, as in all other matters, discard everything that weakens you, have nothing to do with it. As soon as I think that I am a little body, I want to preserve it, to protect it, to keep it nice, at the expense of other bodies; then you and I become separate. As soon as you know the voice and understand what it is, the whole scene changes. The same world which was the ghastly battlefield of maya is now changed into something good and beautiful. All truth is eternal. Truth is nobody’s property; no race, no individual can lay any exclusive claim to it. Truth is the nature of all souls. Blows are what awaken us and help to break the dream. They show us the insufficiency of this world and make us long to escape, to have freedom. Both the forces of good and evil will keep the universe alive for us, until we awake from our dreams and give up this building of mud pies. Come out into the universe of Light. Everything in the universe is yours, stretch out your arms and embrace it with love. If you ever felt you wanted to do that, you have felt God. Even the greatest fool can accomplish a task if it were after his or her heart. But the intelligent ones are those who can convert every work into one that suits their taste. Guest guest
Namaste Chetan-ji, Thank you for your timely reminder and quotes from Vivekananda. I just have one question though on one of the quotes " Anything that brings spiritual, mental, or physical weakness, touch it not with the toes of your feet." I am thinking that by this statement , it means - do not entertain any idea/object/person that brings about spiritual, mental, or physical weakness. Is that what the statement means ? Please correct if wrong. Thank you and Jai Maa Nanda
Guest guest
Yes. That is the right interpretation to my mind. Guest guest
Another quote from Swami Vivekananda, that I recently read. "I do not see into the future; nor do I care to see. But one vision I see dear as life before me: that the ancient Mother has awakened once more, sitting on Her throne rejuvenated, more glorious than ever. Proclaim Her to all the world with the voice of peace and benediction." from http://www.ramakrishnavivekananda.info/vivekananda/volume_4/writings_prose/reply\ _to_the_madras_address.htm With much love. -Santo "Aum Shantih Shantih Shantih."
