Guest guest
Namaskar Swami Ji, I would just like to know what gotra is in the sangkalp? Is it ones family name or is it the name of the guru who initiates you If you dont have a guru what do you say as the gotra?
Guest guest
Namaste Rajan, I am happy to present the answers to these questions. We had a similar discussion on Gotras in Mar 2004 - I scooped out the answers that Swamiji had given from our archives. You can also refer to post# 3291 and subsequent posts for further q&a amongst the participants. Question from Sanjay:- How does one find the respective Gotra? Swami Satyananda Saraswati writes :- Either you find from your Guru or from your family heritage. Often older relatives might know or a family priest. If you are new, ask your guru. Latha writes : What happens in the case when someone does not have a Guru ? This is specific to those Non-Indians who dont have a Guru and no concept of a family Gotra. Is there any default value they can put when taking any sankalpa ? Swami Satyananda Saraswati writes :- They can use Satyananda Gotra, because that is the lineage from where they have learned the puja. In another post Swamiji wrote :- There were originally seven rishis who knew all the Vedas. After some time it became too much for their disciples to learn it all. So they divided the knowledge into shakas - branches. Each branch was presided over by a Gotra. By recognizing the name of the Gotra, someone can tell from which branch of the Vedas your family has come, and then which mantras will be most important or effective in that individual's life. Hope that helps.
