Shiva is Divine, Supreme Divinity. He is also the “ultimate

meditator”. His eyes are partially open because He sees both

within and without. He accepts the smallest gifts with love. He

loves it when His devotees sing to Him and do puja to Him. He is

mesmerized by the Divine Mother. He is the stage of consciousness

upon which She dances. He is quite a dancer Himself (known as

Nataraja). I have been having a love affair with Him for 12 years.

He is my Ishta Deva. He is totally delightful. He never lets me

down.

Chant His 108 names or do His puja and He will let you in on His Secrets.

Ardis, you given our new member lots to think about. Can you explain

ishta deva, puja, and chanting the 108 names? Whew! That's a lot,

isn't it? But new members value this kind of basic information.

Thank you so very much!

i would tell them, do shiva puja for a while and look at the picture

of shiva on the cover. they will get attracted to shiva and want to

know him. they might find themself talking to him or calling out to

him.

they might still not be able to say who he is, but they are

somehow closer to knowing him.

om shiva.

The word Ishta means “chosen” or “favorite”.

Deva means “God”. So, one’s ishta deva is the form

of the Divine that you are most drawn to. Shiva is my ishta because

He has drawn me into the passionate worship of his form.

Puja means worship. It comes from the sanskrit: punya means merit;

jayate means to give birth to. Puja is the worship which gives birth

to the highest merit, to be in the presence of God.

I have mailed the 108 names of Lord Shiva under separate cover. They

appear in the Devi Mandir’s Shiva Puja Beginner and the Shiva

Puja and Advanced Yajna (Fire Ceremony). In the latter, there is

also the 1000 Names of Lord Shiva. The names are in Sanskrit and

English. I find them very inspiring to chant and to meditate upon.

The name of my home temple is the Shiva*Shakti Mandir. When Shiva and

the Divine Mother are in Divine Union, there is no longer any duality,

there is only the One. We are all an expression of that Divinity.

Jai Shiva Jai Maa

Dear Shiva,

Shiva is worshipped both with and without form. Shiva is

consciousness. The Great Yogi. He loves nature. Shiva is the God

of the people. His ganas or band of devotees that travel with him,

are those unwanted and/or despised by society. Shiva is not bound

by societies judgment of morality. To receive His blessing all one

needs is devotion. As one saint said, "I have never renounced any

vice: it is they who have left me." To me, this summarizes the

message of Shiva. Most commonly worshipped in the form of the

lingam. He is the sensuous Yogi, yet maintains his yogic traits.

Shiva is the ultimate renunciate, beyond attachment. To love his

consort is all that keeps him in the world. If not for Parvati

Shiva would be in infinite meditation. Shiva marrying Parvati is an

analogy between a human wedding, which releases the highest

ecstasies of the flesh, and the wedding of Kundalini with Shiva,

which is a symbol of the highest bliss attainable by an individual

soul. To me, the entrance of the power of Shakti into the higher

mind is the ultimate goal.

Muktananda's title says it best, "Nothing Exists that is not Siva."

Ram

PS. This is my view of Shiva, not sure if Swamiji would endorse this.

Dear beloved Karen,

Lord Shiva is the'Consciousness of Infinite Goodness'. Anything that

you can think of that is the most beautiful, good, infinite, pure,

etc. expand on that! Shiva is pure Spiritual Awareness... Shiva is

the witness to Natures Dance... Shiva is the canvas, Maa is the

paint... But, ultimately, you cannot separate Them. They are 2 sides

of the same coin. Shiva is the Fire, Maa[shakti]is the power to

burn...

Do Japa [chanting] of His main Mantra 'OM Namah Shivaya' while

looking at a really nice painting of Him [with His eyes closed or

almost closed]. Ask Him sincerely to reveal Himself, Karen, and He

will...not necessarily with 'bells and whistles', but He will reveal

Himself in someway. Maybe you will feel more Peaceful...etc. Don't

ever give up! We are all behind you cheering you on! Om Namah Shivaya!

Jai Maa! Jai Swamiji! Jai Ramakrishna Deva!

Thank you all for the information on Shiva. I have really enjoyed

reading all that you have written.

I am new and trying to learn more. It is very helpful when people

explain and go into more details for the newbies.

Again Thank you!

OM NAMAH SIVAYA

dear Karen, i wanted to contribute my thoughts about SIVA but have

found it difficult because SIVA's essence is hard to convey. but

something came to me this weekend that really exemplifies who SIVA

is to me.

you see, because of my occupation, sometimes people will give me

their book. then typically they tell me how they are the "real

deal." this has happened to me a couple of times. i am never quite

sure of their intention, but i have found it doesn't really matter.

as the book is a gift, and it is free to me. i love a good book so

i just read it. the books are usually those life story type books.

non-fiction, i guess, at least that's how they are presented. one

time i had read only about 26 pages and i was already finding

inconsistencies. easy things like dates and numbers not adding up.

i don't know about you but i hate it when that happens because once

i find one non-truth, or inconsistency, it then becomes more

difficult for me to believe any of it. i could be disappointed

about it, but what's the point. instead i just try to derive some

benefit from it, take something positive from the situation.

this is what made me think of SIVA. to me, SIVA is so great (KALI

as well for that matter) because both the left and right handed

paths worship them. SIVA teaches us Truth is absolute. SIVA has

taught me that one doesn't need the truth to know Truth or the real

to know Reality. so i just read the story, enjoy the game, and see

if there is any Truth in it for me. i just try to learn from it.

you see, non-truth can teach Truth, the unreal can teach Reality.

and like the late, great, prophet Bob Marley said, "Truth is the

light, so you can't give up the fight." another quote of his i love

is, "the road to life is rocky and you my stumble too so while you

point your finger someone else is judging you. Judge Not."

but always give thanks because it's all GOD anyway. God Luck to you.

JAI MA
