Guest guest
Dear Linda, Thank you for reminding us of this amazing story. I experienced something similar to it first hand with Swamiji. The area of the ashram had been experiencing a terrible drought. It got to the point that there was danger of forest or grass fires. The stream had dried up. The well was almost out of water. They were trucking water in. So Swamiji decided to do homa to Lord Indra to ask for rain. The devotees (and Swamiji) had just dug a huge hole in the ground to serve as a reservoir. They had lined it with a special lining that would keep the water in. I happened to arrive just as they were finishing up the last touches on the reservoir. There was a sense of urgency. Swamiji was pushing them to work harder and get it completed. He had been praying to Indra for several days. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. It was as hot and dry as ever. I was sitting on a bench in the outdoor kitchen. Just then Swamiji came down from the reservoir. He said "it has started". Indra has answered our prayers. Just then I felt a big drop of rain on my forehead. I couldn't believe it. But Swamiiji was already rushing into the temple to say thanks. It was the most beautiful rain I had ever felt. It was so clearly a blessing. It was soft and steady and plentiful. I just stayed there and enjoyed it and gave thanks to Lord Indra. And it rained and rained and rained and rained. It filled the reservoir to the top. It turned the road into mush. But the trees and the birds were singing. When I came up to the Mandir the next weekend, Swamiji was praying to Surya to dry up the rain. One thing I remember about this experience is how persistent Swamijji was. What stayed with me was his faith. He had no doubt that the Gods were listening to his prayers and wanted the best for all of us.
