Guest guest
I am caught between two choices---Freedom at midnight, a book about the time just before and just after independence. The book really broght the imapct gandhiji had on the Indian people at that time, how timeless his message is and how important his contribution to the Indian independence is.For kid growing up in the 80s where he was being bandied about by all and sundry and his message being distorted this was a real eyeopener. The other one-A brief history of nearly everything.-This is a book which starts off from describing the begining of the universe to the current day and covers archeology, geology, dinosaurs the evolution of humans and how little of all this we ( scientists and the rest of us)know about all this. While reflecting on the book after reading I was reminded of a saying in Tamil what you know is equal to a fistful of sand , what you dont know is equal to the whole universe.I am student all over again. regds Wed, 23 Feb 2005 23:44:18 +0000 Nanda chandimaakijai Qstn for the group - THE book that has inspired you theMOST User-Agent: eGroups-EW/0.82 Mailing-List: list ; contact-owner Original-recipient: rfc822;narenrk Dear All, Here is a question for the group. It was prompted by Ardis' and Sankar's post on how they feel so inspired by "The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna " Can you share the ONE book that has inspired you the most in changing your outlook on life ? I request only ONE because then we REALLY have to sift through to see which was the book that really really REALLY inspired us the MOST. It would also be great if you could either quote from the book or explain what it is about the book that inspired you. Here is mine. My inspirational book of all time , the book that caused a definite change to my outlook on my behaviour towards people is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I felt (and still feel) so moved by the character of Atticus Finch - the epitome of decency and a true Christian attitude - to love his neighbor as himself. To me that embodies the best spiritual goal as defined by Swamiji. Here is hoping to hear from you. Jai Maa Nanda
Guest guest
Namaste Narenrk, You said "reflecting on the book after reading I was reminded of a saying in Tamil what you know is equal to a fistful of sand, what you dont know is equal to the whole universe. I am student all over again." Can the mind of an individual absorb the vastness of God Consciousness or is it absorbed ? Thoughts on the way to my first visit to India were of our planet moving around the sun, our solar system moving in our galaxy, our galaxy moving in space and where am i now in the universe. The altitude of the intercontinental flight at the time made the earth seem to move below while the plane stayed suspended above in space. So Dear Narenrk and Dear Nanda this is from the most inspiring book for me by Gurudeva, Gems of Cognition that I read in 1970 before my first visit to India. You only create Time And hold a Consciousness of Space In the lower Realms of Your mind. Not only the Conscious mind Must be Concentrated But the Subconscious Mind As well. Meditation Is the outcome Of a Concentrated Mind. With Love Om Namah Sivaya Kanda
