Fasting for Shivaratri

It was the morning of the first day of Maha Shivaratri. I was blessed

to already be at the Devi Mandir. Swamiji had led a retreat to

prepare the devotees and disciples for this special Holy Night. He had

explained that fasting from sunrise to sunrise would help us to fully

experience this worship of Lord Shiva.

I woke up, bathed and out of habit went over to the kitchen. In the

middle of the table were some muffins sitting on a plate. Again, out

of habit, I thought “morning=food.” I cut a muffin in half and ate it

as if I were on remote control.

Just then Swamiji was walking in front of the Temple. Seeing him

jogged my consciousness. Oh no! I had broken my fast before it even

started. I felt terrible.

I hurried up so that I could walk next to him. Without my even saying

a word, he said “it’s OK, you can still fast for Lord Shiva.” I

started to tell him about the muffin. He said “I know, I know. Each

moment is a new moment. Start your fast now.” I was so grateful.

It was a wonderful fast.
