I think the height of your altar should depend onYour height The height of your idol or picture – so that either your eyes at the level of the face of the deity (you want to look face to face at your beloved) OR you are looking slightly up. Dear Nanda ~ I have an interesting dilemma, in terms of making an altar. I live in a trailer where every bit of room is used up. I currently have my altar on top of a bureau in the "living room" area, but this doesn't feel suitable for chanting. Can I just put my Shiva Nataraj on the floor, on a lovely cloth, with the incense, and use that for my altar. ~ Thank you ~ Linda P.S. Eventually, I will be in a house, now that my hubby is working again, but it will be some months before I can make a read altar. I really hope you are perhaps putting all of this information in one folder in the section for later review. Many blessings
Guest guest
Jai Maa! Once, I was sharing a very small studio apt with another person and a cat. Needless to say, there was hardly room for anything! I did what a lot of Indian Hindu ladies do - I set up my altar in a corner in the kitchen. THe kitchen area is a good place to have an altar, because practices done there will purify the food, food preparation is a very holy activity in Hindu tradition. I think, ideally, if the altar is in the kitchen, it is good if the kitchen is a vegetarian one. If it is not, it may be better to keep the altar in another area. I had my murti in a small corner on the counter, underneath the cabinets, with a picture of Devi behind it. I would either stand in front of it while chanting, or pull up a chair in front of it for longer practice. I now live in a regular apt, so I have the luxury of a separate room for a puja room. I have also set up a "secondary" shrine in my kitchen, because I feel so happy seeing it when I'm doing the necessary activities of life, like cooking. The shrine is just a shelf mounted to the wall above the sink, so whoever is doing the dishes can just look up and see holy images! Jai Maa!
