Altar directions

In the Guru Gita, it is suggested that the cardinal

directions you face while meditating (or performing

puja) lend certain intents or "flavors" to the

experience.

Facing the North (and dressing in white clothes, or

using a white or crystal mala) produces Shanti

(Peace), both within your self, and to others around

you. Very auspicious.

Facing the East (and dressing in reddish clothes, or

using a red or coral mala) produces Akarshana

(Attraction, power-over) -- this can be power over

others, or power over yourself. Somewhat auspicious.

Facing the West (and dressing in yellow clothes, or

using a yellow mala) produces Artha (Wealth), either

for yourself, or for others. This is considered

mildly inauspicious, as it encourages entrapment in

Maya and illusion.

Facing the South (and dressing in blue or black

clothes, or using a blue/black mala) is considered

inauspicious. It is resorted to by manipulative

magicians who cast curses and seek revenge, and will

eventually result in death.

Offhand, I would suggest putting your altar on the

Eastern wall. Or if you decide to use the walk-in

closet for performing puja, perhaps use a white mala,

and dedicate any Artha towards world peace?

Re: Beginner Puja - Day 2- Getting ready for

the alt'a'red

state

Dear Nanda,

Thank you for this offering....

My big concern is is the direction all that important?

My study has a

built in closet along one wall and in the centre in

what should have

been the dressing table part I have placed my alter.

However, it is on

the western wall of the house, so that the dieties

face east and I face

west when chanting, meditating, doing puja etc. My

desk for everything

else is on the eastern wall because it would not fit

on the northern

wall which is mostly window or the southern wall which

is door and etc.

to put a puja in the corner would mean I couldn';t get

at the filing

cabinets which are in the closet.

I feel a bit silly carrying on about this but if I am

trying to do this

correctly and you are taking the time to instruct

us...well it

shouldn't be wasted.

Thank you

Jai Maa and Jai Swamiji

Grace
