Guest guest
In re: Henny's question about ringing bells at arati annoying the neighbors... There was a tough period many years ago when I had to move back in with my parents. I had a little room in their apartment in the Bronx, facing a lovely back alleyway with grass and a tree. Three sides were surrounded by apartment buildings, and I soon noticed that every morning, around 8 AM, from one of the windows facing the alleyway came the most wonderful, persistant ringing of bells, followed by a woman's voice chanting, "Om shanti, shanti, shantihee!" Some neighbor was daily performing arati! I began to look forward to this morning ritual, and performed it along with her (the chanting, not the ringing), entering into a deep state of meditation. Many times I blessed this Hindu neighbor, and when evntually I found work again, and moved to my own apartment, I missed being able to hear her morning offering. I asked my parents after the bell-ringing neighbor, and they never really noticed the daily ritual. I've slept over at my parent's apartment, and no longer heard the ringing -- I guess the Hindu neighbor moved away. My mother has since passed away, my father is recently in a nursing home, and my sister is closing down the old apartment. It's very sad. I have fond memories of sitting in that little bedroom, looking out at the tree in the alleyway, and meditating to my unknown neighbor's arati. -- Len/ Kalipadma Messenger Show us what our next emoticon should look like.
