Guest guest
Jai Maa !!! We start our Chandi Parayana tomorrow night. What is so great about this Parayana? The entire Chandi path is a Mantra. In Kerala we have astrologers who depend on Prasna Marga (a special type of astrology). Whenever they foresee any grave calamity they advise Chandi Parayana. The qualified priests do this. The vibrations emanating from the parayana are beneficial. I had posted once about getting the Adhikara (permission) to do Parayana from my Guru. Why is it necessary? If you look into Chandi path you would find that it is just not a recital of the poem, but also includes rituals and prayers before and after. This procedure varies according to the traditions. We start with 1. Durga Saptha Sloki – this is a poem comprising of excerpts from Chandi path. 2. One hundred and eight names of MAA – this is from Viswasara Tantra These two are not prescribed in all traditions. 3. Chandi Kavacham – The Armour 4. Arghala stotram – The praise which unfastens the bolt. 5. Kilakam – The praise, which removes the pin. 6. Ratri suktam – praise to the night of Duality. (Vedic and tantric) 7. Sri Devyaadharvashirsham –The Highest meaning of the Goddess – This is from the Atarva Veda (Guess). Not prescribed in all traditions. Not found in many books. 8. Navarna mantra- Here again the Dhyana Sloka, Nyasas and the mantras for the Nyasas depend on the tradition. For example the Dhyana Sloka I recite is different. It is the first stanza of Chandi Dhyanam starting "Madharme …… As I have always said " we are blessed because Swamiji wrote this book and we could get a proper tradition in detail." It is only because of the complexities of traditions laid down in different scriptures and followed by different gurus that a proper initiation from a Guru is insisted upon. There have been many commentaries of Devi Mahatmyam like Shanthanavi, Pushpanjali, Ramashrami, Nageshi, Guptavati, Damsoddharam, and Durgapraddepam. It is explained in scriptures like Kathyayani Tantra, Kataka Tantra, Kroda Tantra, Meru Tantra, Marisikalpa, Rudrayamala and Chidambara Rehasya. A book published By Sri Sarayuprasada Sharma in the early part of this century called Sapsathi Sarvaswam has tried to compile the information from many of these resources. So with all these commentaries and books we have many ways of Chandi Parayanam. But when a Guru tells you a way it is always a tried and tested way. I would only compare this with climbing a mountain. You have a guide who knows the shortest and the easiest way up because he has climbed that way many times before. So it is better to follow the Guide. But a few people are adventurous or foolish (depending upon the point of view) to try a new unchartered route. They either lose their lives in the mountain or discover a new route and become famous. There are some great Gurus who have gone through the unchartered route and discovered new ways. But for most of us the tried and chartered route is better. What am I blabbering about now? Jai MAA !!!
