Guest guest
When I was staying in Kolkata 20 years back this is a prayer, which will sound from so many places during the Durga Puja. Now you do not hear it because of the restrictions on loud speakers. The way it is recited arouses you. The cassettes of SRI SRI Chandi that I have enjoyed are: 1.Hymns from Sri Sri Chandi - By Sannyasins of Ramakrishna Math, Belur- available at the Ramakrishna Math - A pleasure to hear. 2.Mahishasuramardhini- in Bengali from HMV cassettes. Released in 1983 this is the rendering of Chandi by singers of All India Radio, Calcutta. Though in Bangla(except the prayers), this is a cassette, which will be appreciated and desired by all Devi Bhakthas. The song Jago MAA is great. This is to be heard to be believed. The Bhakthi Bava elevates everyone. Now back to our Parayana The Ya Devi prayer comes in the 5th chapter, which we would be reciting today. This is also the start of the Uttama Charithra or the final episode. You might have noticed that we have a Nyasa at the beginning of each charithra. Chapters 1, 2, and 5. The Dhyana Sloka of the 5th chapter is that of Maha Saraswati. The chapters 5.6, 7, and 8 are very interesting because we encounter the Seven Mothers and MAA KALI. We also hear of the role played by the Lion, which is the Vahana (Mount) of MAA. [by the way there is some confusion between Mahalakshmi of Devi Mahatmya and Mahalakshmi the consort of Vishnu and the Deity for prosperity. Temples in Bombay and Kolhapur, which are Mahalakshmi (MAA CHANDI) temples have come to be known as Mahalakshmi temples. The easiest way to distinguish is by checking up the Vahana. MAA CHANDI has Lion as her Vahana and we also have a Siva temple inside the complex.] In these chapters we are introduced to the seven Mothers Brahmanii, Maheswari, Vaishnavi, Koumari, Varahi, Narasimhi, and Indrani. We also learn about the evolution of Maa Kali, and Kousiki and how Chandika got the names Sivadhoothi and Chamunda. Ya Devi sarvabhudeshu Matru rupena samsthidha Namastasyai, Namastasyai, Namastasyai, Namo namah !!!
