We will be reciting the 9th and 10th chapter today. These deal with

the annihilation of Shumba and Nishumba and their armies. With these

chapters the episodes are over.

Again we see that the Vahana of the Devi Lion also plays a big enough

role to be mentioned in the episodes. In our Puja we keep the protima

of a Lion also. Like Nandi and Garuda the Vahana of Lord Siva and

Vishnu, the Vahana of Devi also is also worshipped.

[You would have seen a number of images of Maa Durga riding a tiger. I

have not been able to locate any scripture where MAA rides a tiger. I

believe(wild guess) it is because in Hindi the word Simha means Tiger

also and the painters have taken the tiger as a Vahana. Especially Maa

Vaishno Devi (where there are three Pindas representing Maha Kali,

Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati) is always represented as riding a

tiger. But the Vahana in the temple is a Lion.]

About reciting the Chandi path there is no restriction on reciting the

Four prayers individually. So you can start with the four prayers.

Once you know these well, recitation of Chandi Path becomes easier.

This is my experience.

Some more tit bits about Durga Sapthasathi. It is surprising that the

epithet DURGA is used only on seven occasions. This epithet is evolved

from the killing of the Asura Durgama, which is expected to happen.

This is mentioned in 11th Chapter.

Jai MAA !!!
