Jai Maa,

The following is taken from a spiritual commentary/rendering of Sri Mahishasura

Mardini Stotram, a song of praise written by Sri Adi Sankaracharya. This

stotram was written as a means of condensing the story and energy of Sri Chandi

into 20 verses that would be more accessible to most people. Since not everyone

can learn Sri Chandi, Adi Sankaracharya wished to give this stotram to all so

that they could still benefit from the powerful message and energy of Chandi

Path.

Verse 1

Oh Mother, You are the essence of the sacred sound of Omkara, which has been

resounding throughout the universe since before the beginning of Time. You are

Adiparasakti, the original supreme Power, which, bursting with energy,

manifested this entire Creation. This universe with its many millions of spiral

galaxies containing billions of suns and moons is truly Your form only. You are

the divine light that pervades all space and dwells in the inner recesses of

every soul, without exception.

As You are beyond time and space, beyond name and form, beyond even Truth, how

is it, then, that from time to time You appear on this Earth in human form? It

is only because as the supremely compassionate Divine Mother, You look on all

beings as Your most beloved children, and You have taken a holy vow to do

whatever is necessary to guide, protect, and provide for the welfare of all

Your children. Every mother cares only for the happiness of her children, and

Your greatest joy lies in giving joy to Your devotees; thus, when You incarnate

You delight in granting bliss to all, especially Mother Earth, who is comforted

tremendously by the gentle touch of Your tender lotus feet on Her surface.

Oh Mother, You are present in my heart as a divine energy of purification.

Please take up Your holy trident and destroy all the dark forces of negativity

that have been ruling my heart for many millions of births. Oh Mother, I take

refuge in You alone!

I love love love Mahishasura Mardini Stotram. It was

the first Sanskrit text I learned to chant. Ah, Shri

Shankaracharya-ji. You can always count on him to

have composed/channeled works with the highest bhava,

the deepest meaning, and the most beautiful poetic

effects.

Is Mahishasura Mardini Stotram in the Durga Puja book?

Jai Maa!!

Sri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is not in any Devi Mandir

publication that I know of. It is very compact. That could also be

said of the Durga Puja. I very much like the seven verses expressing

the essence of he Chandi, and those 7 verses are 13 verses more

compact than Mahishasura Mardini's 20 verses. Still I do enjoy

reciting Sri Sankara's Mahishasura Mardini.

The complete Chandi is rather lengthy, yet it should not be

neglected especially at this time of Narvaratri.

Those who neglect to do their Chandi are not likely to attain asanna

siddhi. I've yet to meet anyone who has attained multi hour swastik

asanna capacity through the terse Mahishasura Mardini Stotram.

Chandi conveys something interesting to do while sitting for the day.

Jai Maa!

I completely agree with rudran2 that Chandi should not be neglected, especially

during Navaratri. There is no substitute for Chandi, and it is in a class of

its own. Adi Sankaracharya saw that many people did not have the means or the

time to learn Chandi. There were many people who either couldn't read, couldn't

pronounce Sanskrit slokas easily, or were too busy feeding their families to be

able to learn and chant Chandi. Out of his compassion, he composed (channeled)

Mahishasura Mardini Stotram, so that all people would be able to know of Devi's

divine activities, supreme compassionate love, and protective power. MMS

contains many powerful bijaksharas that work to purify our karma when chanted

with devotion, and the stories of CHandi are there in a very, very condensed

form. It's kind of like Cliff's Notes for the Chandi! However, as I said

before, there is no substitute for the majesty, power, and sublime grace of

Chandi.

I have so many fond memories of singing MMS during arati from times I've been

in India, and the rhythm is really remarkable. THe rhythm itself seems to carry

me along in a divine river of sound-energy. I feel completely swept away in

bliss. Many times when hearing this stotram, I feel as if Durge Ma is

manifesting right in front of me, dancing majestically with Her trident and

destroying all the demons of negativity with ease and delight.

On my last trip to India, I was in an area where there had been too little rain

for many years. The ashram had instituted the practice of doing Chandi Homa

every month on the full moon day. While I was there, the homa was done, and it

was raining quite a bit. At one point, a special offering is made, the

purnahuti, and just as the offering was made to the fire, the rain increased in

intensity. It seemed a very clear response. A few minutes later, the rain

started coming down so hard, it completely drowned out all other sounds. I've

never seen rain come down so hard in my life, and I almost felt it might turn

into a typhoon or something. That was really amazing. It reminded me of how

Swamiji once summoned rain in a village struck by drought by doing CHandi

nonstop. Chandi homa is a remarkable thing.

Anyway, I wanted to post spiritual commentary on MMS because it's a nice way to

touch on many of the stories and themes in Chandi in a condensed form.

Jai Maa!
