Dear nityashakti and All ~ does anyone know where one can buy ghee online? There are no Indian grocery stores where I live. Or does someone have a recipe for how to make it? If you go to http://www.leeveal.com/ghee.htm and click on "The Ghee Movie," you can download an instructional video for how to make ghee. Making ghee is a wonderful, almost alchemical experience. If feels like a sadhana to me. Jai Maa! Aravind Mail Mobile Take Mail with you! Guest guest
I haven't checked my e mails in a few days, so someone else may have already answered this, but: It seems that ghee that can be bought is usually not very fresh. It's easy to make. Use unsalted butter, organic if possible. Cut up the four sticks into a sauce pan and let them melt and simmer on medium heat, but don't get a rolling boil going. This takes about 30 to 40 minutes. As the ghee simmers, keep skimming the white foam off the top with a spoon and put it aside (it's not good for much, but the cats like it). When the ghee is nearly done it will have very little foam, and will become clear. It should sound like a rain shower on a tin roof. But don't stop too soon. Let it get a slightly golden/brown color. (this gives it the ability to keep from spoiling, and gives it a nice nutty taste). Some of the milk solids on the bottom of the pan will turn brown and stick to the bottom; that's o.k. When it looks right, poor it off into a jar - something that can take the heat, like a mason jar. We put some in one jar to eat and cook with, and use another jar for worship. One should not intermix the two, keep the jar for puja, etc. strictly for worship purpose only. It's easy to make your own ghee lamps also, with cotton. Take a piece of cotton and twist it up into a wick, and then put ghee all over it. Put it into a short candle holder, with some ghee in there also. (you can put a penny or some cotton in the bottom of the candle holder to keep the wick upright, and just leave that in there all the time). It takes a little practice to get this working for you, but after a short while you'll be an expert at it! Jai Maa, Hope this is helpfulnierika (AT) aol (DOT) com wrote: nityashakti wrote: It really DOES make a lovely meal for Devi: with jasmine rice and ghee.
