MAA and her images

I have reading the messages of our friends about the different kinds

of images and Swamiji's reply. Thought could add some of my

thoughts and experiences.

For a five-month-old baby does it matter whether it's mother is

ugly or beautiful, rich or poor? It knows its mother and trusts her.

Our attitude should be similar. What difference does it make? She is

MAA. Our Mother.

Our family has a Devi temple. It is more than 150 years old. At that

time there was no temple in the village, which had only about 20

families. So the Puja of one house was converted into a temple. There

is no idol. There is a Kumkum filled box in front of a mirror, which

is worshipped as Devi. Now the temple has grown big with a trust for

managing it. It is still private and there is no idol. Again there is

a small clearing in the midst of the paddy fields in our village.

There a couple of stones are worshipped as Dharmasastha and

Vigneswara. We still worship there though we no longer own any paddy

fields.

I have always been devoted to Lord Krishna. He was and is one of my

favorite gods. When I was attracted to MAA, I did have some doubts.

Long time back I had visited Udipi on the Durga Ashtami day. Udipi is

famous for the Krishna temple consecrated by Swami Madhavacharya one

of our great gurus. When we went to the temple in the morning we did

not see Krishna in the sanctum sanctorum. We saw MAA in the

Mahashamardhini form. So we thought we had come to the wrong temple.

Went out and enquired. We were told that during Navaratri Lord Krishna

is dressed as MAA in different forms.

This way we were shown that Lord Krishna and MAA are one and the same

and all our lingering doubts were cleared.

Jai MAA !!!

Sankar,

Thanks so much for sharing this. India has such a wonderful tradition

of worship. I wish we had that here...

Jai Maa!
