Dear all,

in recent posts concerning sadhana and also in relation to the Guru

Gita the importance of a strong relationship with the guru was

mentioned, and also that there is a difference between a devotee and a

disciple. The difference is not really clear to me. Is the difference

a matter of commitment? Of intent? Or of formal initiation? Are not

all disciples devotees?

OM NAMAH SIVAYA

in my not so expert opinion i seem to recall the difference between

the disciple and the devotee as being something like; a devotee

recognizes the Guru's Divinity or greatness but does little to

instigate personal change and a disciple makes a concerted effort to

follow the example of the Guru. personally i don't feel confident

making that judgement for myself let alone for someone else. and does

it really matter? it's just categorizing. the Guru can make that call.

the question reminds me of a quote i recently read from Anandamayi Ma;

"Whatever may be your shortcomings, don't be depressed. Don't lose

hope. Try to improve yourself. God loves you more than you could

ever imagine."

Hi Eric,

I believe you got it right.

All disciples are devotees, but not vice versa.

The distinction is the formal commitment/initiation between the Guru

and the student.

Dear devotees,

who can resist;)? Ok, I'll share some: years ago, I was told to decide

what my goal was, write it on a paper, memorize it and burn the paper.

After a lot of thinking, I wrote: 'I will apply all my powers to

achieve the following aim: to become a true disciple, worthy of the

name'. At the time I honestly thought this would be only the

beginning, a first stepping stone to greater things and I felt quite

good about myself for chosing such a 'workable' goal. I am still

working at it....

Devnath,

Like everyone, I want to be happy.

Like everyone here, I have realized I can only achieve happiness in God.

So, I practice, and try to do the best I believe I can with what I

have at the moment. I rely on the compassionate grace of God and Guru.

Ultimately I would like to express the Divine Will in my every act,

but this is so far above me...I want to leave this world better than I

found it, but time is so fleeting...

My goal in the short-term is the same as it has always been, to get

samadhi. What comes after, I will leave to after. That is my Great

Desire, to practice samadhi.
