Namaste Eric, Thank you for your question. The goal is to do sadhana - and anything that comes in its way, cleverly disguised as self-deprecation, or guilt ... - is just an interruption. - a mind game, yet another tactic that stops us from doing the sadhana and keeping at the goal. Now the question is "Do I want to stay interrupted, or do I want to snap out of the emotion and continue with my sadhana?" Sure, as sadhaks , we will confront these situations and its variations over and over and we learn to be alert. But if we do slip up, then we just get right back up and keep going. And when we dont give up but keep going, we are re-training our minds to stop thinking in those grooves that held us down. I hope I helped answer your question.
