Dear Sherri, Shree Maa blessed me a sheepskin rug from IKEA - thats what I use as my asan. Swamiji's asan is a bit elaborate , multi layered. 1)The base is a HUGE sheepskin rug (again from IKEA i believe) 2) on which he places a cushion that is covered in a red cloth, 3) on top of that there is a multi colored cloth mat over which 4) he has an old much worn sheep skin ( i think this must be of some special significance to him). I have seen disciples at the Mandir use a kusa grass asan and covered by a blanket . The kusa grass asan by itself can get uncomfortable , so a cloth covering is very beneficial. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Jai Maa I use a simple thin white blanket, usually on top of kusha grass. I really like black antelope deerskin. It was my favorite for a long long time, but I haven't had one come under me in a while. Sheepskin is a common choice here at the Mandir. I used a red and white blanket for some time too, but it kept getting smoldering coals burning in it when I used it at the fire. A friend of mine has a Tiger skin from India somewhere. It is amazing to behold. Get something simple and neat and tidy that you can roll up and take with you anywhere a sadhu might be going. Something practical. Not a hodgepodgey or something nice and cozy and all and all sleepy and raggedy that's been lying around since your were a little toddler. Start fresh. The asan is important. Clean, simple, respectful and conducive to a good posture and attentiveness are some guiding principles. That and the advice of the Guru. By the way, for what it's worth, I highly recommend going with Maa and not your local yoga "expert" vis a vis the suggested use of a cushion for back support idea that I read earlier in this thread -- bag the cushion. It makes Her work easier if you do what She says . One day you will find yourself in the asan -- it comes from Her. In the meantime, until you get asan sidhi, do one mala twice a day in Vajra asan with pranayama. Doesn't matter how old or stiff or big or small you are. Do it mentally at first if you can't can't there with your legs. She will give you what you need.
