Tilak of Ashes

Last Saturday, Swamiji led us in chanting the 1000 names of Shiva at the Havan.

At the end of the homa, he took a little from the ashes to offer as

Tilak (a blessing of a mark on the forehead) to the devotees.

 

Then he said (and I paraphrase)

"Every object in the universe is composed of five elements - Earth,

Water, Air, Fire and Ether, with Fire being the purest. So when we

offer our negativities, they get purified by the fire. what is left

behind are the ashes - the purest form of the Earth element. We

takes the ashes, symbolic of our pure and purified desires and wear

them as a mark on our foreheads"
