In doing pranayam and counting with japa or mantra, do you ever allow

the mantra and breath to slow down considerably, for example, longer

retention, or extended exhalation? for the purpose of further

stilling mind and body and increasing unity with spirit.Swamiji's

response:

Yes, but keep the ratio Purak:Kumbak:Rechak consistent.

Leela,

Puraka is the inbreath

Kumbaka is the held breath

rechaka is the outbreath

The ratio is 1:4:2 measured in seconds, or heartbeats, or mantras. An

example might be a four second inbreath followed by sixteen seconds of

holding, followed by eight seconds of breathing out.

Swamiji,

On the pranayam ratio and keeping consistent, is it ever appropriate

to change the ratio, and sticking to it ... for example;

instead of 1:4:2, making it

1:2:4 ... or even,

1:2:8 ... 8 being slow and complete exhalations.

Thank you for your time with me on this, I am grateful.
