Options for Chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Here are some Swamiji-approved variations for chanting the MMM:1.

aloud2. silently3. subvocally4. with pranayam*5. 21 times (or

more, a mala is fine!)6. lom-vilom** - lom – means forwards and

vilom – means backwards.*Inhale for the length of "Om Namah Shivaya"

or your Guru mantra if you have one. While exhaling, chant one or

half or more verses of the MM mantra. Keep the number of verses

chanted consistent for the duration of the chanting.** Directions for

lom-vilom: Lom-vilom is a way of chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

with a samput. A samput is a set of extra mantras added either to

the beginning, end, or both beginning and end of the standard

recitation to lengthen one's chanting. The lom-vilom is a samput

added to the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra at both ends--the beginning and

the end of the mantra. However,

the ending samput is the reverse of the beginning samput. The samput

is "Om Jum Sah Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah." When chanted with the Maha

Mrityunjaya Mantra, it goes like this: OM JUM SAH OM BHUR BHUVAH

SVAHtryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanamurvarukamiva

bandhanan mrityor-mukshiya-maamritatSVAH BHUVAH BHUR OM SAH

JUM OMNotice how the last line is the exact reverse of the first.Jai

Maa! Jai Shiva! Jai Swamiji!
