Guest guest
Kalia, Looking these verses over again, I've changed my mind. I don't think they (vs.160-163) describe a progression from gross to subtle, as I inferred, but rather, describe the activities of a perfected child of the guru, or perhaps the process of perfection by which one "becomes the Guru." Look at verses 156-158. These can be understood as instructions by which children of the guru become perfected. I'm thinking the following verses, esp. 160-163, describe the activity of a perfected one, and how that person "becomes the Guru." The word translated as "wise" in these verses is "jnani". We all know that a jnani is one who is perfected in Knowledge or Wisdom. The jnani by definition has a pure mind (remember we are not talking about one who practices jnana as a discipline, but a jnani in its full sense). Now as I understand from other scriptures it is the "dirt" of the mind (dirt relates to another previous verse, 157) that prevents one from seeing the brilliance of Purusha, the individual soul. So, presumably, the jnani always has the vision of his own soul, or Purusha. This brings me to your comment, Kalia. I think you were on to something there. If the jnani is always basking in the light of the Wisdom of his own soul, who is doing the recitation, the ego or the Purusha (atman in your post)? I'm thinking it's the Purusha, and that's why the verse goes on to say, "By merely having the intuitive vision of such a one, another life, another birth, will not be known." The vision of Purusha is always an intuitive one. So, we have the child of the Guru, perfected in the knowledge of his own soul, completely pure of mind, who recites in his soul every moment, whether talking or sleeping. Jai Maa! Dear Chris, This is my understanding too. Thank you for putting it forward so well. KaliaDo You ?
