Dear All,

One of the mantras that we chanted at the fire yesterday is the

Triloki Tilakam. This is a very popular mantra at the Mandir and it

is dedicated to Goddess Gauri - she who is rays of light.

This is how the mantra goes

"Hriim Gaurii Rudra daayite yogeshwaarii hum phat swaahaa".

This mantra was given by Lord Dattatreya to Ekavirya. To know a

little more about the story and its background , please read pages

73-79 of the Swami Purana. The book is available at the bookstore -

http://www.shreemaa.org/bookstore.htm

Here is the meaning of the mantra

"Hriim - The totality of Maya

Gaurii - She who is Rays of Light

Rudra - The Reliever of Sufferings

Daayite - Giver of Compassion

Yogeshwaarii - The Supreme Lord of Union

Hum - Cut the ego

Phat - Purify

Swaahaa - I am one with God"

I heartily recommend getting the Swami Purana. It weaves a wonderful

tale, embedded with notes about the background of this mantra and

other useful information, and gives an overall background on

Hinduism. Many of us would have heard some of these stories while

growing up. Indeed I did, but when I read Swamiji's rendition, I

learned something new in each story. A wonderful asset to my

collection. And the nice thing is that , these stories can be read

aloud to children too. A book that I frequently read and re-read.

Jai Swamiji

Nanda
