Shanti ~ Linda Dear Linda, I would like to know more too, and request anyone who is well informed about this subject to post on the group. I was talking to a Sanskrit teacher this weekend and she said that each meter could be sung in different Raagas - ie Indian classical music tunes. Once Swamiji said that there were different ways to chant a text. One would be to sing it, and that would be more for enjoyment and entertainment. The other is to chant it with pranayam. As a person that has enjoyed both styles, I would like to say that while it is nice to be able to chant it in a sing-song tune, NOTHING BEATS THE SHEER PUNCH OF CHANTING WITH PRANAYAM - MANY VERSES TO THE BREATH. Chanting with pranayam , IMHO, gives me a feeling of pure exhilaration , like breathing mountain air. Jai Chandi Maa Nanda
Guest guest
Dear Linda, The following is a wonderful recording of the Chandi Path (recorded "live" in Benaras). I think it may have been mentioned here already? but you will be able to pick up the different ragas and changes in meter from this recording. When I listen to it, I am grateful that we also have Swamiji's recording, as I think it would be really difficult to begin with this recording and try and also do the pranayam that Swami recommends! Hope this is useful for you. The information is copied from Khazana website (importers of Indian music). " Music - Durga - Chandi Path - Part 1 and 2 - 700 Powerful Mantras recorded on the banks of the Ganges Durga - Chandi Path - Part 1 and 2 - 700 Powerful Mantras recorded on the banks of the Ganges by Multiple Artists (pandits) INMU6383 Contents: Chandi Path / In India, the tradition of Mother Goddess, the creative, feminine form of the Eternal Supreme Being goes back centuries. One of the famous scriptures, the Markandeya Puran has detailed description of the various forms, incarnations, and immortal acts of Shakti, known by different names in Her different forms. With 700 select Shlokas of this Puran, a special Saptashati was created. This Durga Saptashati is also known as Chandi Path, which we have presented in this album. Essentially, it covers three main incarnations of the Goddess, namely- Mahakali, Mahalakshami and Mahasaraswati. These three respectively represent the three basic traits or Gunas, which are Tamoguna, Rajoguna and Satvaguna.
