Guest guest
Dear All, A friend of mine told me this story yesterday and I wanted to share it with you. Dont know the source of the story but happy to narrate it to you .... Once upon a time, there lived a King that ruled wisely and well over his kingdom. He was loved by his subjects , but yet, he felt (as kings sometimes will) a great sense of disquiet and a growing feeling that perhaps he wanted something more to life than one filled with material joys,a beautiful wife and illustrious sons. (In modern parlance this would be called "mid-life crisis" , that period of life when a man gives up all that is sane in favor of reverting to adolescence. Of course, that doesnt happen to any of the men in OUR satsanga ) Anyway , coming back to our story, the disgruntled King goes to his Guru and shares his feelings. He wants out and wants his Guru to help him. The wise Guru was all sympathy and offered a suggestion if the King was open to the idea. "Oh King", says the Guru," How about giving me the Kingdom? I can take good care of it". The King thinks this a good idea and says "Guru, you got it" They shake hands over the agreement, the King begins to take leave of the Guru. "Hold on a sec" , says the Guru, "Where are you off to now ?" "Going to the treasury to pick up some greenbacks and then on the road to start a new life, a fresh start, a new girl-friend even maybe.." says the Ex-King. "Well, now that the kingdom is mine, you cant walk in and take MY money" says the Guru The Ex-King thinks it over, and agrees and says ..."You are right. Its yours now, but maybe I could go to the city to meet some friends and see if I can call in a few favors ..." The Guru shakes his head and says "They are MY subjects now and I dont want you to go ask them any money.." The Ex-King is really at a loss but agrees with the Guru and walks slowly to the gate pondering his next move ... when the Guru asks "So my dear Ex-King, whaddya plan to do next ?" The Ex-King looks piteously at the Guru and says "Dunno" "I got a great idea" says the Guru, "Why not work for me ?. I have a new position open - the King of this country. Its a great opportunity for you and I could use your experience too . Moi, I'd rather hang around here at my Ashram away from the city, so I'd really like for someone to be able to oversee the kingdom. Would you like the job?" The Ex-King jumps at the chance and says "Oyez" So the Ex-King now becomes the King and goes back to his land and rules wisely and well. After a few weeks, the Guru visits the King and asks "Hoe gaat het met U?" or "How are things with you?" The King smiles and says "Terrific" The Guru asks "You really are doing the same job as before, so what is the difference now ?" The King falls at the feet of his Guru and says, "Yes, before the Kingdom and all in this land , were MINE and so I was attached and worried over everything. But now, its YOURS, and all I have to do is to take care of it knowing that I am only a caretaker". ====================== The moral of the story, my dear little chickabiddees , is the difference in ownership and caretaker-ship. We are all here to live in this world - the minute we think "I me mine" we are walking down the path of attachment and its attendant confusions. When we think "its all YOURS dear God, thank you for letting me enjoy what you have for me today" we are on the road to peace. May we all walk towards to road to peace !!! Good night all y'all.
