Guest guest
don't be like me. i break off a little chunk and light it. wow that sets fire fast. i let go and it drops onto the bigger piece into a tiny little copper bowl. in seconds it is filled with fire. no problem, i put the HOT little bowl into a larger bowl. in seconds THAT bowl is full of much larger flames. next all the fire alarms in the house go off at once. mind you i am in my tiny little altar above the stairs. i lift up the VERY HOT bigger bowl with ... what? the ONLY THING I HAD ... my rudrushka beads! yes i did hesitate but this was an emergency. i made sort of a sling and lifted up the burning bowl so it would not set the carpet on fire and put it elsewhere. Oh my gosh! Remember muktimaa's warning about using a very SMALL amount! This is why i DO NOT like the camphor that comes in chunks that you have to break off! Sometimes, they are synthetic, as well! i like the small crystals that they carry at www.krishnaculture.com Even the words "small CHUNK" makes me cringe. Remember, all, please!! Camphor heats up the metal very quickly and it gets HOT, HOT, HOT!!! This is why i like to put a layer of vibhuti on the bottom of the camphor spoon, as it absorbs some of the heat. Also, what you use for offering the camphor needs to have a long fairly heavy handle that separates your hand from the HOT spoon with the HOT camphor. i am soooo glad that nothing worse happened, and that maybe everybody who is new to using camphor will learn from Steve's potentially destructive experience. Oh, Steve ji! i am soooo grateful you didn't catch anything on fire. Jai Maa! Jai Swamiji! Jai Thakur Ramakrishna Deva! Lord Agni, i bow to YOU!!! Your sister always, muktimaa
Guest guest
thanks for the warning, dear friend. I set fire to a little chunk a few days ago above the sink (to be on the safe side) and it burned for what seemed like half an hour, in the spoon in the wet sink (where I had dropped it because the spoon became HOT!) So now I have ordered the small crystals our dear sister Muktimaa recommended and until I have received those, no more camphor for me! Very good of you to tell everyone, I thought it was just me being clumsy. I'm glad that Lord Shiva's tears were at hand to save you, with love, Henny , "Steve Connor" <sconnor@a...> wrote: > don't be like me. i break off a little chunk and light it. wow that > sets fire fast. i let go and it drops onto the bigger piece into a > tiny little copper bowl. in seconds it is filled with fire. no > problem, i put the HOT little bowl into a larger bowl. in seconds THAT > bowl is full of much larger flames. next all the fire alarms in the > house go off at once. mind you i am in my tiny little altar above the > stairs. i lift up the VERY HOT bigger bowl with ... what? the ONLY > THING I HAD ... my rudrushka beads! yes i did hesitate but this was an > emergency. i made sort of a sling and lifted up the burning bowl so it > would not set the carpet on fire and put it elsewhere. > > As told to Smokey the Bear by Yogi Bearananda

Guest guest
Dear Steve, Glad all is okay with you, your family and house. Looks like your blazing devotion could not be contained. May your pure devotion continue to increase and blaze brightly beyond all limitations. Om namah shivaaya! Note: To all who offer light, incense and camphor: Please, please be careful lighting the camphor. As you can see camphor is very flammable. A little piece is all you need. After you offer the camphor you can put it out rather than let it burn for safety purposes. It is better not to use it if you don't have a camphor container. Just recite the mantra and offer the camphor mentally. Remember that the camphor is the offering of blazing devotion. Note: Also be careful when offering the light and or incense. Keep any open flame or incense away from cloth or anything else that might be flammable near the altar. Nowadays we burn our tea lights in an enclosed case. , "Steve Connor" <sconnor@a...> wrote: > don't be like me. i break off a little chunk and light it. wow that > sets fire fast. i let go and it drops onto the bigger piece into a > tiny little copper bowl. in seconds it is filled with fire. no > problem, i put the HOT little bowl into a larger bowl. in seconds THAT > bowl is full of much larger flames. next all the fire alarms in the > house go off at once. mind you i am in my tiny little altar above the > stairs. i lift up the VERY HOT bigger bowl with ... what? the ONLY > THING I HAD ... my rudrushka beads! yes i did hesitate but this was an > emergency. i made sort of a sling and lifted up the burning bowl so it > would not set the carpet on fire and put it elsewhere. > > As told to Smokey the Bear by Yogi Bearananda

Guest guest
Steve, sounds like Lord Shiva put some excitement into your worship! this is just me, but I interpret their presence when such events happen. and, I always keep a small, portable fire extinguisher in my shrine (at the side of my altar) just in case... The Home Depot has them. thanks for sharing. Jai Shiva!
