Dear Eric,

 

i agree with yourself and Linda, Brian's post was excellent. i also

agree with you that mantra takes our mind away and so separates us

from our thoughts but in the final sentence, Swamiji suggests that the

word "deplete" as against "deflate" is more appropriate.

 

The repetition of the mantra is like the double edged sword - on the

one hand it removes us from being the subject of our thoughts and on

the other it lifts the consciousness of those thoughts. Remember in

the Chandi chap 4 vs 19 " ..... So that being purified by the weapons,

these thoughts may be raised to the higher worlds".
