472--Q&A WITH SWAMIJI-- Sacred thread and puja

I have a puja-question: in the enhanced Shiva puja, we offer a sacred

thread. There is something in the text which puzzles me, so perhaps

one of you with more sacred thread knowledge could help me? The text

is:

'Om the sacred thread of the highest purity is given by Prajapati, the

Lord of Creation, for the greatest facility'.

Now, what does 'the greatest facility' refer to? Is it the facility to

perform the nine activities (the nine threads, I presume) mentioned in

the next verse? And why is it said that the Lord of Creation gives the

thread? Is it because it means we already have all we need to manifest

the qualities described because we share in Universal Life?

And another thing: could these activities (in the verse beginning with

'shamo')be arranged thus; first three - tamas, second three - rajas

and last three - sattva? (And perhaps within each group, we can also

make the same distinction in threes, something like tamas of tamas,

rajas of tamas etc.?)Or am I barking up the wrong t(h)ree?

I just had to ask, because everytime I recite this text, my mind

wanders off and I lose the thread of the puja.

Swamiji's response:Maybe you could come down from your t(h)ree and no

need to bark so much. These are all pure qualities, and perhaps there

is no need to ascribe them to the three gunas.

The greatest facility is for remembering and performing. It is given

by Brahma, the Lord of creation, because He established all forms of

worship.

Dear Swamiji,

Dropped from my t(h)ree with a thud:). Less barking, more listening,

remembering and performing. Thank you for your guidance,

with love,

Henny
