What are the sanskrit names for the Waxing and Waning lunar halves of

a fortnight? Waxing - Sukla Paksha (shukla means bright)

Waning - Krishna Paksha (Krishna means dark)

Pakshe means fortnight. What are the Sanskrit Tithis ? (Days)

Tithi or Tithau means day. Example, Dwadasham Tithau or the

12th day. We know this because we have a lunar calendar handy, else

replace with 12th June.Pratipad -1 -- Pratipad Tithau ,Dvitiya -2 --

Dvitiyam Tithau ,Tritiya -3 -- Tritiyam Tithau,Chaturthi -4 --

Chathurtham Tithau,Panchami -5 -- Panchamam Tithau,Shashti -6 --

Shashtam Tithau,Saptami -7 -- Saptamam Tithau,Ashtami -8 -- Ashtamam

Tithau,Navami -9 -- Navamam Tithau,Dashami -10 -- Dashamam

Tithau,Ekadashi -11 -- Ekadasham Tithau,Dvadashi -12 -- Dvadasham

Tithau,Trayodashi -13 -- Trayodasham Tithau,Chaturdashi -14 --

Chathurdasham Tithau,Purnima -15 - Full moon-- Purnimam

Tithau,Amavasya - 15 - New moon-- Amavasyam Tithau There are 15

tithis corresponding to the 15 days in each lunar fortnight.Number 15

has two depending on whether it is a dark/waning (krishna pakshe)

fortnight and therefore is called Amavasya , and if it the

bright/waxing (shukla pakshe) fortnight and therefore called Poornima

..If there are 2 tithis listed for a day, that means that at sunrise

both tithis are in influence. If you start the puja/homa before

sunrise, use lower number. If you start after sunrise use the bigger

number.

Dear Karen ~ now my head is spiinning. Does anyone know of any site

where one can print or download or purchase a Hindu calendar for

2006, which would have all this information on the calendar? I am a

very visual person, and I think having a visual "map" would greatly

aid my understanding. Thank you ~ Linda
