When we do puja for someone else we generally tie red thread around their wrist. Left for women and right for men. This same mantra is recited in the Chandi on page 24.The significance of tying the string here is to remind us of God. In a sense we are binding ourselves to God... Dear Parvati ~ thank you so much for doing such a wonderful job of explaining about the threads in the Chandi and Advanced Shiva Puja. This is most helpful, and the first time I have really understood anything about it. Blessings ~ Linda
Guest guest
Namaste Parvati Ma & All: Just a brief question following your thorough explanation about the sacred thread. Quite recently during my pilgrimage through some of the temples in northern India, I was instructed to present my right wrist for the sacred thread as I'm unmarried, and told that married women have the thread tied around their left wrist. Perhaps Swamiji or someone else can clarify if this practice is "regional", or specifically delineated in some Hindu scripture?
