Guest guest
Namaste Kamalaji, This is what Swamiji had to say in answer to your question about the thread: "The thread tied around the wrist is different from the sacred thread worn around the neck and over the shoulder. This thread is called moli and does not come from scripture, but from custom. The custom is different all throughout India. Our practice is to tie the right hand of males and the left hand of females. Kamalaji asked: Just a brief question following your thorough explanation about the sacred thread. Quite recently during my pilgrimage through some of the temples in northern India, I was instructed to present my right wrist for the sacred thread as I'm unmarried, and told that married women have the thread tied around their left wrist. Perhaps Swamiji or someone else can clarify if this practice is "regional", or specifically delineated in some Hindu scripture? The thread tied around the wrist is different from the sacred thread worn around the neck and over the shoulder. This thread is called moli and does not come from scripture, but from custom. The custom is different all throughout India. Our practice is to tie the right hand of males and the left hand of females.
