I think it started somewhere in Chapter 2, when we were chanting how the Gods and Goddesses put forth their energies and Chandi came forth blazing as a pillar of fire. Every word of those few verses, he dramatized for us until we were actually watching the happenings of the Chandi right in front of us. We watched the Goddess roar, RING the bell to destroy those asuras, CUT other asuras to pieces.. Swamiji was enacting the story right in front of us. Of course, like all teachings, I didnt immediately "get" it and thought that it just made for some good entertainment. Until today, when I chanted the Chandi. I found my mind wandering while chanting, and decided to adopt Swamiji's technique. (If the mind wanders as minds WILL, let it atleast wander on the topic du jour, I always say) So I chanted with all the visualizations. I saw Mahishasur getting kicked around, changing forms left right and center, until the Goddess finally kills him. I saw Self-conceit all puffed up, sending "He who appears to be a friend" as his emissary with a marriage proposal to the Goddess, and I saw the Goddess coyly simpering "I am but a silly girl, but I made this promise that I have to be defeated in battle by my prospective husband", I saw Kali having her hands full, one hand holding a head of Chanda and the other holding the head of Munda. I saw Raktabija growing in number until he filled the universe.I saw ...I saw ... It made the chanting come to life for me! It made me want to clap and cheer everytime an asura got kicked , it made me understand the fervor that Maa and Swamiji exhibit when at the end of a chapter Maa shouts "CHANDI MAA KI JAI " Thank you Swamiji for sharing this technique to infuse my chanting with fresh energy when I really need the inspiration.
