suresh,

no, it is even more uncontrolled. both waking and dreams states are

actually dream states, this is a very congruent way of looking at it.

it is tempting at first to want to look into esoteric ideas like dream

control. doing the pujas and other practices from the gurus will get a

devotee steady and stronger a lot faster. working with dreams can pull

a sincere a devotee even farther into delusion.

the benefit of making mistakes is realizing the error later, then one

is quite clear ... but if a fast train is pulling up, it is a great

idea to get on.

Dear Suresh,

The conclusion of the sages of India is that

neither the waking, nor the dreaming, nor the deep,

dreamless states are ultimately real. Only the

consciousness which witnesses each of the states is

real. "Asato maa sadgamaya--", "Lead us from the

unreal to the Real".

Their test for reality is a little unusual. They say

that, for something to be real, it must not change or

disappear. Like a true disciple, it must be dependable

and steady, not here today and gone tomorrow.

They found that only consciousness does not change;

only the witness of the three states is steady,

faithful, dependable, and True---like Shiva. All else

is temporary, fleeting, "a will-o-the-wisp that leads

with blinking light to pile more gloom on gloom".

One great yogi of India said at the end of his long

life, "I can remain conscious (be the witness) in

the dream state, but not in the causal (the dreamless)

state". But another great sage of South India said,

"I can witness the causal state very well indeed". So

there is a hierarchy among men and women of realization

based on the extent of consciousness they have realized.

By becoming more and more conscious in the waking state

the dream state becomes more orderly and conscious. And

so the greatest teachers have said that the whole process of

spiritual awakening begins, and can be conducted to the end,

in the present moment and in the waking state itself.

Their consensus is that it is not necessary, or adviseable,

to explore, and especially attempt to control, the subtler

realms which are themselves ultimately found to be unreal,

fleeting, Maya, and always hungry for those who wish

to control them.

If one can bring the inner Self, the Sakshi, the Atman,

the antaryamin (the inner controller) to full consciousnes

in the waking state, the goal of spiritual life has been met.

So Ramprasad, the great poet of the Mother Goddess, sang "I

have put sleep to sleep".

Respectfully,

Tanmaya
