Guest guest
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Jai Maa! Yesterday we were chanting at the fire in the Mandir for our dear Lalitha. We began by chanting Vishnu's 1000 names and then we did a mala of the Gayatri mantra. After we finished the chant, I asked Swamiji 3 questions and I would like to share his responses in a series of posts. Please consider that I am writing from memory. The actual discussion was very absorbing and beautiful, but I am unable to reproduce it here. Q: When a soul leaves its body, why do we chant the Gayatri Mantra. Swamiji replied that The Gayatri is the Moola Mantra of Sanatana Dharma. You can chant it at any time. However, it is always chanted at the time of all rites of passage. >From page 18 of Chandi path, the translation of the Gayatri is We meditate upon that Light of Wisdom which is the supreme wealth of the Gods. May it grant us increase in our meditations. Swamiji says that we are always seeking more wisdom. So whenever we seek wisdom we can chant the Gayatri mantra. Wisdom on how to live, how to talk, how to interact, how to study., etc. When a soul leaves the body, we are seeking wisdom from that soul. That soul has made its journey on earth and we are seeking from it the wisdom that it obtained when it made that journey. We are also praying that the soul be blessed with wisdom to assist it in making its journey beyond this earth. We are praying to Gods to bless the bereaved family with wisdom in this sad moment. So whenever we seek wisdom, we can chant the Gayatri Mantra Jai Maa! with love and prayers srini
