Guest guest
Thank You for this opportunity to journey together, at least for a short while. A little background, if you do not mind, for you alone. I do not wish to disturb others in any way, and for whatever reason, experience tells me this is often the case. I have been a student of both world religion and philosophy for as long as I can remember- from at least the young age of eleven or twelve. In my youth, questions about the nature of religion on a cosmic scale, that is how our perspectives relate to the rest of the universe, known and unknown- such questions as this, found me outside the bounds of Christian Organized Religions. Initially my studies were on an intellectual level- this having changed only upon my interactions with American Sufi's, and Pir Vilayat Inayat Kahn. I was initiated by him in the late winter of 1982 in Northern Florida. Circumstance soon found me at his premier community, The Abode of The Message, in upstate New York. >From there I found myself, after a year, at Bernard Tetsugen Glassman Sensei's Greyston Seminary on a path that led further still to The Kaghu Theg Chen Ling Tibetan Community in Hawaii. Soon I was to return to the mainland, only after another visit from Pir Vilayat. After some time of all but aimless wandering I again found myself among the Sufi's and took hand with the late Alexander P. Hixon, Jr. Ph.D., Columbia, Philosophy and World Religion. I took hand with Lex, not only as a Sufi Sheikh, but received initiation in The Ramakrishna Order, as well as continuing my studies in the Soto-Renzei Zen / Chan Tradition, and additional Tibetan Lineages. I am, based on inclination and experience, a Non-Dualist. No matter through which door, window or gateway I enter, I always find myself in but one space. This however tends to make others uncomfortable. I belong to all of these Schools or Traditions, and none at all. Whatever the end result, I look forward once again to this journey with you. Guest guest
On Thu, 01 Apr 1999 09:09:56 PST "Jason Clark" <revjas writes: >"Jason Clark" <revjas > >Hello, >My name is Jason. I am a Christian who is very interested in >Hinduism. >I think that if there were a temple here to take me through the >process of conversion I might become one. > Hello, Jason. With your post and the recent ones from Rachel regarding Hinduism and the process of conversion, perhaps a few points need to be brought up: Hinduism is a religious tradition of many variants, and the Advaita Vedanta of Shankara, Ramana Maharshi, et al is only one of them. One does not need to be a Hindu or to give up one's nominal Christianity to explore the truth of the great non-dual revelation, which is entirely universal and no respecter of formal religious affiliation(s). Many of us regard Jesus (especially as depicted in such non-canonical tomes as The Gospel Of Thomas) as an important non-dual voice, no less resonant than those emerging from the Hindu contex, others have come to the non-dual via such distinctly non-Hindu pointings as those of Lao Tzu, Buddha, and Rumi. That said, satsangh may well be the perfect venue for exploring the "why" of the process of formal religious conversion before looking to the "how," which is a mere technicality. As far as this writer is concerned, the moment you feel yourself to be Hindu I'll take your word for it, and if you feel yourself free of your inherited Christian identity, that too is accepted without condition. Guest guest
Jason Clark [revjas] Thursday, April 01, 1999 12:10 PM Re: Welcome to "Jason Clark" <revjas Hello, My name is Jason. I am a Christian who is very interested in Hinduism. I think that if there were a temple here to take me through the process of conversion I might become one. Harsha: Hi Jason. Welcome to the list. I thought Bruceji expressed well our point of view. Religion is man made but the Divinity is natural and inherent in all and expressed through many different religions.. We do not focus here on any particular religion much although we are happy to discuss any religion. This is a Satsangha, a fellowship where people discuss, exchange, and express ideas on spirituality and relate their experiences through prose or poetry. It is a group of gentle and friendly people. People belonging to all types of religions and traditions are members of this list. While your interest in Hinduism is appreciated, no one is really interested in converting anyone to anything here. If you are interested in Hinduism (or Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, Jainism, etc.), there is a lot of good material available at your local library, and there are some good web sites I am sure. There are also courses offered in colleges on many different religions and philosophies. Two of the great Hindu scriptures are the Upanishads and the Bhagvad Gita. There are many more. Of course great teachers and scriptures exist in every religion and no religion has a monopoly on the Truth. Sometimes, we focus here on the common elements of all religions such as inclusive awareness of our existence and how it manifests outwardly as a life that encompasses love, kindness, compassion, and embracing all living beings. Guest guest
Hi. I translate stuff on Dzogchen and Mahamudra and - very occasionally - Ch'an, as well as alchelical texts from the Old and classical French and am also fairly well versed in certain aspects of Chinese alchemy. I've also studied Kabalah from several points of view as well as looking into Sufism, and have a fairly thorough knowledge of Hermetic and Gnostic litterature. I am pretty much au fait with the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi and those of the Kaula and Nath Siddhas. I'm a musician and composer, also a more-or-less poet, and I teach English to keep body and soul together and t'ai chi ch'uan and t'ai chi jian when and as the need arises. Was Rainbo suggested I have a look round. Hope I'm not intruding. m

Hope I'm not intruding. m If Rainbo suggested that you look around Mike, then you just look around. What Rainbo says here is the law! Guest guest
Thank you Harsha... Permit me to introduce myself...I am a longtime meditator and seeker. I have been on the path in one way or another for the past 24 years, since I was nineteen. Like many of my generation, I have explored many ways, and the connecting thread that weaves throughout has always been meditation. I am grateful to have found this sangha, and I look forward to getting to know you all. Radiant Blessings, MariJoy -owner [-owner ] Tuesday, December 14, 1999 11:25 AM mjoy Welcome to Hello Dear Friends, Welcome to the list. Please take a moment to review this message. In the classical Yogic and Tantric paths as well as in the nondual tradition of Advaita Vedanta, Satsangh is considered important for spiritual aspirants. Ramana Maharshi, the Great Jnani Sage of Arunachala, often said that Satsangh leads to Self-Realization. My Teacher, Sri Chitrabhanu Ji, who visited the Sage Ramana in his teen years, has said that the company of saints even for a short time provides a great impetus for spiritual development. Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, and Swami Dayananda Sarswati were some of the early influences on my spiritual life as a child growing up in India. All of these great spiritual personalities emphasized the power of Satsangha. Satsangh is a Sanskrit term meaning "The Company of Truth,(Reality, Existence, or Self)." We should certainly all keep the company of Truth and maintain Awareness of our True Nature. In practical terms Satsangha means Fellowship. Fellowship in this context implies keeping the company of others who are on the spiritual path. In Satsangha support is found to stay on the spiritual path. In Satsangha, good things happen. Insights are gained and Consciousness is Awakened to Its Own Nature. Here Shakti (Energy) is Aroused in a genuine movement towards Its Source (Shiva) to enjoy the Union and Recognize It Self as the Self as Pure and Eternal and Complete Self Awareness which is Self Joyous and Self Existent. This is a gathering of gentle people devoted to Self-Awareness, Meditation, and the various practices in Yoga and Tantra. Some are deeply rooted in rich spiritual traditions and others have come to the spiritual awakening on their own or through a diversity of spiritual paths. We take great joy in the company of spiritual seekers, aspirants, teachers, and masters. is a place where we have come to experience the Joy of Fellowship. May God bless all of you with all things good and beautiful and may you find the Great Peace in Your Own Heart.
