Guest guest
Reactions to this (if any) should be interesting :-) "A Spiritual Test" ------------------ Many claim enlightenment or Realization. Who is to know whether any given person may indeed be Realized, or is self-deluded? Perhaps a "spiritual test" might be formulated to see if such a state has truly been achieved. In writing this, I refer to no one. This is simply offered for consideration of anyone who may consider themselves fully Realized. To "take this test" is to never go back. (1) Give up your family. They are At-One with you in I AM and thus there is no need for physical closeness. Say goodbye to them, shut the door, and never return. (2) Give up your friends. They are At-One with you already. Do not answer their calls. Let them all go. (3) Give up all connection to the outside world. It is unnecessary to one who is fully Realized. Eat nothing except that which is most simple and will cause the body to continue to exist. Drink nothing but water. (4) Get rid of all personal possessions, except for bare necessities. Throw away all clothing except perhaps one or two pair. Throw away furniture, stereo equipment, telephone, everything. Abandon your automobile by the side of the road. There is no need to go anywhere or to do anything. (5) Give up your house or place of dwelling. It is unnecessary for physical survival. Let yourself be homeless, and on the streets. One may meditate just as easily at an abandoned bus stop or in an alleyway as on a comfortable bed. There are plentiful sources of food available for those who are homeless (food banks being one). (6) Pay no attention to physical appearance whatsoever. Wash the body only when its state of "dirtiness" becomes a threat to physical health (this would equate to approximately once per month). (7) Speak to no one. You are already At-One with them. Approach no animals. You are already At-One with them. Avoid all human beings, for there is no necessity of bodily or other forms of conflict. You and they are purely At-One in I AM. (8) Eventually, give up anything not previously given up, including the physical body. It is useless, and Consciousness is eternal. You are Realized, and so you will be At-One with Brahman upon physical death. Is this not to be desired? Therefore, stop eating and let the body die. You have now completed the spiritual test. If all went well, other men may now have reason to assume you are "Realized" without doubt (step 8 may be skipped if desired). If you do not wish to take this test, assume that any word you utter, ever, will be taken with a grain of salt (including your claims to Realization), and accept the fact that nobody can truly know whether or not you are "Realized," perhaps including yourself. Yet I have to meet the person who, while on a safari, received teachings from swami Dombo... Many homeless persons would fit in just as well - there are some who are enjoying their lifestyle. BTW, the body dies faster when one doesn't drink too - no eating and drinking is a painless way of euthanasia for elderly Jain monks as well as for Alzheimer patients in the final stage of the disease. A healthy body can survive up to 90 days on water. Jan

As Jan stated in his reply elephants and homeless people would fulfill the above requirements. I've often wondered at the assumption that an 'enlightened' being needs to give up all the trappings of the external world. It seems to me that a truly 'enlightened' being can live anywhere, dress anyway and interact with others without attachment being well aware of the role the body is playing and knowing it to be simply a role. How could someone prove to be enlightened? Recitation of holy texts wont do, nor a display of siddhis. Apart from Mr. Michael Martin, claiming to be Sat-guru for the Western world (usenet, alt.meditation, alt.meditation. shabda etc.) no one is doing so. > > As Jan stated in his reply elephants and homeless people would fulfill the > above requirements. There were jivan muktas living as beggars and as kings; see: http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/saints/jivanmukta.htm A detached one can walk along the crowded tropical beach and nothing will "stick" to the mind, wheras someone without detachment will be hunted by the pictures from the mind even in a dark forest. Purity and detachment are insaperable. Jan
