Harsha,

I can't confirm this but I can remove some of the magic. There are some

cases where "normal" people (no monks) were suffering from a lethal form of

cancer and as a "last solution" reverted to a "starvation" diet of 400

kcal/day, consisting of fruits only, during a year or so. The cancer

disappeared.

Although I don't know the exact caloric value of human fat, it will be

between 750...900 kcal/100 gram. So 20 kg of fat provides a storage for

quite a number of days, provided one's body can function with some 400

kcal/day. Another factor is that the body has the ability to go into "low

gear", meaning that metabolism can slow down considerably. This is in fact

the "longevity effect", attributed to fasting. Regular fasting or dieting

has the result the body will slip into such a decreased metabolic rate as

long as it lives. Then any yogi being able to sit in silent meditation for

hours has a low basal metabolism already and if samadhi is entered it will

go to its lowest value.

What is amazing is that apparently the body can survive without vitamins

like B, C, E for such a long time. The strangest experiment I know off was a

French doctor who paid a test-person to live on boiled potatoes only, for

the duration of one year. This test-person could function unimpeded and

didn't get any disease during the "potato" year.

Gloria:

This would be logical, it would be like starving the cancer wouldn't it?

I wonder if they thoughts about this here in the states.

Jan: Yes, this is right. A starvation-type diet will remind the body of

the "struggle for life" and it will become very efficient in dealing with

resources and energy. A cancer can only thrive when there is abundance. The

starvation diet belongs to the class of caloric restriction and it is

thought to be one of the causes for longevity. When the body has to operate

efficiently, it is unlikely that "bad genes", causing dreaded diseases like

cancer, will be switched on. Of major importance is the use of unprocessed

food; this is far more important to health than anything else. Combined with

Ahimsa, there remains no choice but to be a raw food vegan or a fruitarian

:)
