Guest guest
I agree with all the posts on bliss/ecstasy, and expecially the quote from Ramana Maharshi. I believe bliss comes when the concept of ownership is utterly lost. Few realize the great weight that comes with the feeling of "owning" even one thing. Pile these things up, and we are walking around with a thousand pounds on our shoulders. Bliss/ecstasy is the feeling of freedom that comes when it is known deeply that nothing is owned, including the mind and the body. Total lack of attachment to anything physical, emotional, intellectual or spiritual is nothing less than liberation, moksha. Of course, Sri Maharshi is correct. If bliss is "owned," it will become a hang-up and a block to further "spiritual growth" - and likely kill the sensation of bliss altogether, which will be followed by depression (because one is attached to the feeling of bliss, and it is no longer present). This is no more or less than attachment to the body, as bliss is mostly a physical sensation. When bliss is finally "disowned" completely, only absolute peace (calm) remains. As he noted, this is the spiritual state that, if ongoing, leads to Nirvikalpa Samadhi. I was watching a video last night of a speech presented by the 14th Dalai Lama. Occasionally the camera panned out into the audience. Many people there seemed to be wearing something interesting. One woman was wearing a string of beautiful green stones in different shapes and colors, another a symbol of some sort cast in gold on a necklace. I began to wonder, do these people feel like they "own" these objects? Would they scream and yell if someone tried to take them away? An interesting question. The key for me is this: Neither cling to anything if it comes, nor push it away if it comes. Remembering this, the way is always clear.
