Empty head and No Thought Meditation

Friends;

I offer the perpective that one can indeed stop the flow of thoughts in the

head. This is a challenging commitment.

Meditation must be prepared for throughout one's day. With good

preparation, and by meditating in the morning and in the evening, one can,

in time and by Grace begin to slow and finally gain full control over one's

thoughts.

And not only the thoughts. The word flow is only one layer of 'head'

phenomena. There are also all of the pictures, images, feelings--emotions,

memories--ego-concerns: the substance of one's stored life. It IS possible

to begin to dissipate and finally to release all of the tension in the

mind's activity, to still the stream of activities and enjoy the peace of

utter and complete silent stillness. And this, while absorbed in complete

awareness of the sensation of one's own Self. This, may I suggest, is the

Enlightenment of the Whole Body. One may become aware of the full glory of

the transcendent Awareness only asall the layers of one's consciousness

become free and clear and bursting with light.

In the meantime, of course, it is absolutely fundamental that one accept

oneself EXACTLY as one is at the moment, knowing that with discipline and

commitment, Grace will accomplish All. Uncompromising self-acceptance and

the refusal to surrender to guilt, regret or any sense of failure or

unworthiness. While one is learning to release and eventually experience no

head activity at all, it is quite useful, I have found, to often practice

traditional Buddhist forms of meditation that invite the meditator to

observe one's head activities and not pass judgement, only watch. This

meditation, coupled with other, more purposeful or one-pointed kinds of

meditations can, carry the committed person to her eventual goal of a

perpetually calm and quiet 'head'.
