Guest guest
Dear Lists, Please forgive the pessimism of this message. But I think the Truth needs to be looked at. The Fourth of July, in America, stands for freedom and independence. But let's look into what we are free from, what we are independent of. Originally, the Fourth of July signifies America's freedom from England, from the British. A new nation was established around 1776, with the ideal of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The world is currently separated into a number of countries, or tribes. Each tribe wants to defend itself against the other tribe, and it will go so far as to war, killing each other, to maintain that separation. Is this freedom? Or is it really bondage, each nation set against the other? In the history of mankind, nothing has changed. Civilizations have risen, and inevitably fallen again. Mankind bands into small groups, or organizations, or nations. All of these encourage a sense of nationalism, of separation, of saying "I am special because I'm part of this group." Each group is in one way or another set against the other. I say, there is no freedom until all this is ended. Until mankind is united as one whole organism, there is no freedom at all, and nothing to celebrate. We may look at the Fourth of July as a celebration of "individual" freedom, freedom from duality, if there is any. But to look upon it as representing nationalistic freedom is an unforgivable fallacy. Nationalism breeds nothing but war and divisiveness. I am not an American. I am the Human Race. The Human Race is not free. Why should I celebrate? What is there to celebrate? More wars? More nations defending their borders against "outsiders?" Even within the U.S. there is great division -- black vs. white, liberal vs. conservative, gay vs. straight, etc. This country is not free. No country is free. There will be no freedom until each person realizes that the only freedom that exists lies in the Self. Then, and only then, will "I" find reason to celebrate. Guest guest
Dear Tim: Don't know if the message is one of pessimism or not. However, I was watching Elizabeth this afternoon and was thinking more or less the same thing. There is only internal freedom. It is a positive sign when more and more of us step up and do something to help alleviate the sufferings of others but no political system or organized religion can make us free - that is a step that each perceived, individualized being will have to take on their own. I'm not sure how historically correct this movie was but it is an accepted fact that Elizabeth's reign was the most successful time for England. It was interesting that as ruler (at least in the movie) Elizabeth chose to merge with the spiritual energy of the 'Blessed Mother', not marry and assume responsibility on her own.
