Gender is determined by the sex chromosomes, but they do not come into full "activation" until relatively late in embryonic development (and can be messed up a number of ways). All embryos start out as indeterminate gender, having at one point the "tubes" necessary to develop the genitalia of both sexes. Under genetic, ontogenetic and hormonal influence from the sex chromosomes, the male complement of tubes are absorbed / destroyed in the XX individual (leading to what is known as a female) and the female complement of tubes are absorbed / destroyed in the XY individual (leading to a male). We all have small and very well hidden vestiges of the opposite gender's primary sex characteristics and these vestiges can sometimes become inflamed, cancerous or not entirely destroyed so as to cause physical problems later in life. This is known from embryology 101. If anyone really wants to know the names of the primary sex characteristics and the full information of exactly what tissue of the embryo is developed into the primary sex char. I refer you to "Developmental Biology" by Scott F. Gilbert or "Principles of Development" by Lewis Wolpert et al. Sadly, none of these authorities in the field of animal development and embryology dare suggest a timepoint when the "soulenters" the body. I will venture it may be the time prior to and of the first cell division ? Even Sri Ramana Maharshi deemed the development of a single cell to a adult individual as nothing short of "a miracle". Best regards, Amanda.
